Lycato — design brief and rationale

Companion to the repository-only BRAND.md canon and the implementation checklist in DESIGN_SYSTEM.md. Lycato Design.zip is the visual authority; this document explains why its system fits the product.

Mandate

Make a company feel whole before the founder has to understand its machinery. Every surface should communicate three facts in order:

  1. what the company can prove now;
  2. what needs the founder;
  3. what Lycato cannot yet do.

The product is not a collection of tools. Its value is the connection between domain, mail, site, storage, and the Operator, all held in one attributable record. The identity therefore needs to feel like infrastructure with life in it: dependable, owned, and quietly active.

Visual idea: organic infrastructure

Lycato combines a deep aubergine frame with a light working interior. The dark ground provides orientation and continuity; the interior is where sustained work happens. A single citron pulse marks the next live action. It is never a decorative text colour on a light surface.

The geometry follows the same idea. Continuous forms and one tightened corner make the system feel grown rather than assembled from a generic component kit. Repeated objects share that grammar, while their tightened corner rotates across siblings to preserve rhythm without introducing unrelated shapes.

The mark is one citron organic form on plum, with one tightened corner. The inner aubergine form appears only where size permits. The wordmark is Lycato in Newsreader weight 200: calm, open, and never bold, tracked out, or all caps.

Type and hierarchy

Newsreader carries product meaning and ceremony. Schibsted Grotesk carries instructions and sustained reading. JetBrains Mono is reserved for evidence: IDs, domains, email addresses, times, and tabular figures.

The contrast is intentional. Editorial display type gives the company record weight; the direct UI face keeps work legible; mono identifies material that must remain exact. Six canonical type roles prevent local invention.

Perceptual grammar

Gestalt principles determine structure before borders do:

Voice

Lycato speaks as fact, consequence, one way out. It does not flatter, hurry, or pretend that a roadmap item is available. Owned terms do real product work: the Founding creates the company; standing is its live state; rooms organise work; the Operator acts; the Log records; Handback preserves ownership.

When evidence is absent, the interface says unknown, unavailable, or names the missing dependency with a timestamp. Mint means confirmed fact. Rust means the founder is needed. Neither colour appears only for mood.

The release test

A Lycato surface is ready only when all of these remain true:

The decision filter is the final check: does this keep the company whole, the founder in ownership, and the action in the Log? All three, or it does not ship.
